During the dark days of World War II, Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany from April 9, 1940, to May 5, 1945. Despite the occupation, Denmark maintained its government and monarchy, enabling its people to resist Nazi oppression. The story of King Christian X, symbolizes the profound solidarity and resistance that characterized the Danish people.
The Legacy of The Danish Resistance
One of the most inspiring moments of this resistance occurred in October 1943 when the Danish resistance, aided by ordinary citizens, carried out a daring rescue operation. Over 7,000 Danish Jews were safely ferried to neutral Sweden, evading Nazi persecution. This operation, supported by fishermen, boat owners, and civilians, stands as a testament to Denmark’s unwavering commitment to human rights and dignity. King Christian X, with his daily rides through Copenhagen without a bodyguard, became a symbol of quiet defiance and national unity.
